#1 a mass email blaster which is used to send thousands, tens of thousands, even millions of emails out for massive marketing. These applications are typically PC based, and you process each email blast when you wish to send them out.

#2 an Autoresponder, these applications are for on-going email marketing campaigns, and a good one, will automate most of the redundant tasks. An Autoresponder system will work on its own 24/7 sending out email messages based upon a pre-defined time table that you have outlined in a 'campaign'.

Real life example: If we were to use the example of a marketing consulting company selling design and printing solutions, etc...
- When the company presented their services at a trade show, they would gather the contact's business cards and enter the information into a web screen. This screen would enter the contact information into a specific database for that campaign. The Autoresponder would then send a pre-defined email out the next day... "Thank you for stopping by our booth..." Then 14 days later, it would automatically send another follow-up email with a different message, then another a few weeks later... etc.. You define the messages, and the time table. This system would run automatically whether there was 100 names in the list, or 100,000. Any contact that receive the email can opt out, which is handled automatically.
The same company, may also engage telemarketing, for which they would design a separate 'campaign' with different messages, and maybe a different time table.
A strong Autoresponder solution, would also offer integration right to your web site (which our solution does). Site visitors can enter email address into a form on your site, which will go right into your Autoresponder into a pre-defined campaign and they will start receiving the email messages.
